International Conference on Mountain Tourism and National Parks 2025
To fully implement Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, align with the national strategy for ecological civilization and green development, and promote the sustainable development of mountain tourism and national parks, Sichuan Tourism University will host the "2025 International Conference on Mountain Tourism and National Parks" on April 19, 2025.
Since the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in the United States in 1872, national parks have served as vital platforms for global ecological conservation, with a history spanning over 150 years. China, with its unique geographic features, has cultivated rich biodiversity. In 2021, China officially established its first batch of five national parks, including the Sanjiangyuan and Giant Panda National Parks, with a core mission of preserving the authenticity and integrity of natural ecosystems. Currently, 80% of the world’s national parks are located in mountain regions. The pressing issue now is how to develop sustainable tourism based on the natural and cultural resources of mountainous areas within the framework of ecological protection, achieving a dynamic balance between ecological conservation and the improvement of local livelihoods. This has become a shared challenge for national park development worldwide. In particular, in the context of China’s indigenous peoples’ long-standing relationship with natural resources, exploring "green development" models for mountain tourism not only addresses global ecological governance challenges but also represents an essential choice for promoting harmony between humans and nature.
In the face of global crises like climate change and the rapid decline in biodiversity, the sustainable development of mountain tourism and national parks urgently needs to break free from traditional pathways. The international academic conference serves four main practical purposes: First, it provides a platform for global governance, fostering a shared conservation consensus through interdisciplinary dialogue and sharing China’s pioneering experiences with its national park system. Second, it contributes to the development of a theoretical innovation framework by integrating research from ecology, tourism studies, and other fields to resolve the conflict between ecological preservation and tourism development. Third, it offers valuable decision-making insights to help governments optimize ecological compensation mechanisms and community participation models. Fourth, it raises public awareness, using media and educational initiatives to nurture a culture of responsible tourism consumption. Especially in the context of the “dual carbon” goals, the conference will offer Eastern wisdom to the global transformation of mountain tourism and promote the development of sustainable models with far-reaching demonstration effects.
