Dong erwei, obtained Ph.D. degree in Park, Recreation, and Tourism Management (Leisure Studies) from The Pennsylvania State University in United States, becoming the first Chinese scholar in Leisure Studies and teach in the United States. He is also an internationally renowned scholar in leisure and sports tourism. He has taught at prestigious universities both domestically and internationally, including New York University, University of South Alabama, Purdue University, Shanghai University of Sport, and Arizona State University. Additionally, he holds adjunct professorships at various universities in mainland China and overseas, such as Shanghai Overseas High-level Talents (Eastern Scholar), Visiting Professor at Shanghai University of Sport, Distinguished Professor at Shenyang Sport University and Huanggang Normal University, Overseas Lecturer at Shandong University, Visiting Professor at Kyung Hee University in South Korea, Visiting Professor at University of the Ryukyus in Japan, and Visiting Professor at New York University. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of the Hainan Sports Development Strategic Research Association.

His research interests include leisure and health, leisure and culture, leisure and sports, leisure and tourism, and cross-cultural comparative studies of leisure. He has published papers in journals such as "Leisure Studies" (SSCI) in the UK, "Leisure Sciences" (SSCI) in the US, "Tourism Annuals" (SSCI), "Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research" (SSCI), and "Journal of Holiday Marketing" (SSCI). He serves as an editorial board member for "Leisure Studies" in the UK, Associate Editor of "Leisure Sciences" in the US, Associate Editor of "Outdoor Recreation and Tourism" in Europe, Special Issue Editor for "Chinese Leisure" in "Leisure Studies" in the US, and Special Issue Editor for "Sustainability Development". He has led research projects for various organizations such as the World Leisure Organization, the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of Resource Conservation and Development, the Marriott Foundation, the Korea Foundation for International Exchange, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, the Panasonic Foundation International, the Japan Heiwa Nakajima Foundation, the Okinawa Prefecture Government, the Taiwan Academy of Sciences, the Shanghai Municipal Government, the National Social Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education, and VISA China.

Proficient in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean, Professor Dong has been invited numerous times to deliver keynote speeches at international conferences and forums. His articles have been published in newspapers and media outlets in both Chinese and English, such as People's Political Consultative Daily, China Tourism News, China Green News, and Modernization Magazine, and he has been interviewed by Xinhua News Agency, China Global Television Network, China Daily, Beijing Review, and other Chinese and English newspapers and media outlets.
